Lenovo IdeaPad S540-15IML Review

An all arounder high endurance laptop, that’s what the Lenovo Ideapad is at least for the most part. Like all budget laptops, however, this comes at a sacrifice. One of the downsides is quite unfortunate being the screen choice of Lenovo. They chose a glossy type instead of a matte finish which is elegant indoors but is abysmal for outdoor use but we’ll talk more about that later. Let’s check it out the other things first.

Specs

Processor: Intel Core i5-10210U Memory: 8GB Ram (Dual Channel 4×2) Storage: 512gb nVME SSD Screen: 15.6-inch Full HD IPS Display Glossy Weight: 4.078 pounds (1.9 Kg) Battery Runtime: 11 hours of surfing (12 hours of video playback)

Benefits

  • The battery life of this beast shatters your expectations for a laptop. The secret behind this is their choice of CPU and GPU. With the energy-efficient 15-watt model processor and the entry-level MX250 GPU, you would be able to perform tasks without thinking about charging for an extended period of time.
  • Even with all that performance packed in a laptop, it still looks super thin and has a great overall design. In my personal opinion, they opted for this laptop to look more like Apple’s Macbook Air.
  • Though the GPU is a bit on the lower end, for a budget laptop you are already able to do some heavy tasks like 3d modeling, photo/video editing with ease. You can actually also play some
games but note that the native screen is on 1080p but because of the GPU restrictions, you might have to scale it down to at least 720p to get decent FPS.

Downsides

  • The biggest bummer for the Ideapad is its glossy display. Although it looks classy, it would take a toll on the overall performance especially when working on well-lighted areas and outdoors. It reflects so much that it almost looks like your looking at a mirror than a screen. This laptop is more suited to be of use at home or at the office rather than on the go.

Verdict

  • This laptop is actually a bargain when it comes to price and performance. Although the glossy display isn’t too promising, at the end of the day, it all comes down to who uses it and if it suits your lifestyle then it wouldn’t be that much of a problem. For a price of $880 (£678), it’s definitely worth checking it out.
