Toshiba 55UL5A63DB Review

If you are shopping for an affordable 4K TV, this is probably going to end your search. It provides beautiful pictures that spare no detail while letting you access Freeview and Freesat broadcast with its pre-installed Freeview Play.

Toshiba’s TV brands have taken a hit in the past few years and this TV seems like a way of getting back in the game. It is one of the pocket-friendlier pieces in Toshiba’s lineup and manages to offer Alexa integration and Dolby Vision HDR even at the low cost.

Benefits

With this set, Toshiba makes its picture performance the main affair by developing the TRU Picture Engine. The display quality is divided into 3 aspects: motion control, micro dimming and upscaling. This results in a system where pictures are dimmed in discrete proportions where bright areas become not so glaring while dim areas are spared and fast motion remains crisp.

Unlike most TV sets with Alexa, this actually provides full integration. Alexa interface is part of the system’s core It does not need an external speaker but you would need to hook up an external receiver to get it running.

Downsides

After unpackaging, the image settings need to be recalibrated to achieve optimal performance. Picture modes include Cinema, Natural, Sports, Game etc.

Though the speakers are tuned by Onkyo, it really does not sound so great. You would likely need to connect the external audio device as the default speakers do not punch and dialogue is at times difficult to understand.

Verdict

This is an amazing TV, sleek design, beautiful display and smart features at a great price. The only main drawback is an audio performance which an external audio system can remedy.
